AMAZEBALLS!

Or else Italian Rice Balls.

Tried them for the first time years ago in Italy and again last week at the new Arancini Brothers restaurant in Dalston, which made me experiment with a couple of recipes at home. The conclusion was that -as almost always- keeping it simple, is the key to a satisfying result.
For 24 balls:
2 eggs
30g grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon dried parsley
freshly ground black pepper
salt
water
150g uncooked white rice
100g dried bread crumbs (for gluten free version use gluten free bread)
olive oil

In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cheese, parsley, pepper, and salt. Cover and refrigerate while proceeding to the next step.
Pour water and 1 teaspoon salt into a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir in rice and reduce heat to low. Cook rice until water is almost absorbed, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and slowly pour in egg mixture, stirring rapidly to prevent egg from scrambling. Allow rice mixture to cool for 1 hour.
Pour bread crumbs into a pile on one end of a cutting board. Dampen hands and roll rice mixture into one inch balls, then coat each one with bread crumbs.
In a small, deep skillet, heat olive oil to 175 degrees C. Remember that it should have enough oil to completely cover rice balls. Fry six rice balls at a time, turning as needed to ensure even browning. Drain on paper towels and serve warm. Perfect with spicy tomato sauce, putanesca, garlic mayonnaise.

In The (Duck) Soup

With a menu that changes EVERY day, Duck Soup on Dean Street, in Soho is the best new(ish) place in town. The artichoke was meaty and delicious. The surprise was the combination of blood orange, pink radicchio and ricotta. The raw seabass was an interesting dish, even for non-fans of raw fish like my friend and I, but we really enjoyed it, especially combined with bits of blood orange.
Highly recommended. Booking essential.

Porn Star Martini

Birthday is coming up and the only drink to put me in the mood to celebrate could be this one:

25ml vanilla vodka
25ml Wyborowa Vodka (or plain vodka if you do not want to be that particular)
25ml passion fruit liquer
1 tbsp passion fruit puree
10ml lime juice
fresh passion fruit to decorate
50ml Champagne (in a shot glass)

Shake well all ingredients apart from champange. Pour in martini glass. Serve with a shot of champagne.
Keep some Alka Seltzer next to you for the morning after.

To The Pacific

Ignore any tasteless 'easy on the fig' jokes the punters might crack, based on a recent review of the place in Time Out. The fig toastie is actually delicious.
This is a little diamond in Hackney which survived the week of the riots and is serving good coffee and more, with some cool calypso tunes. Went sans baby which was a good idea as it is not ultra spacious and also I wouldn't like to see the little one chewing their lovely postcards from all over the world.
Walking distance from home. So happy about this place!
Do not fret guys: I will keep M. away or strapped in his buggy.

A Cool B & B

Chatsworth road in Hackney is changing indeed. We now have a lovely bed and breakfast in the hood.
Russells of Clapton looks like the coolest place to spend the night, with rock n roll vibes as the owner used to be a band manager and the prettiest dog in Hackney. Can't wait for the day they will be serving breakfast in the garden for the punters' friends too.

Oh What A Joy : At Bonnington

There are not many advantages about staying temporarily South of the river. Commuting to work to begin with kills me. But beggars can't be choosers and until I move back East later on in the Summer I have to stay South, enjoy the fact that I am not paying rent and not moan. In other words 'shut it'. With places like the Bonnington Cafe this can be truly very easy.
I paid a visit today in the afternoon on my own and it was so enjoyable I am dying to take all my friends there and share the experience.
A few minutes walk from Vauxhall station, this lovely place has a different chef every day and serves vegan and vegetarian food which was the best choice for one of the hottest days of the year. Today Ana ignoring the heat wave had cooked a menu that made me want to order EVERYTHING. In the end I got the delicious carrot and ginger soup for just £2 and a watermelon and lime fresh juice for just £1,50. I also got a takeaway polenta with walnuts for later on, which i enjoyed in the park. Then I was smiling like an idiot for the rest of the day.
I am going again on Tuesday!

National (Crypto) Vegetarian Week 2010

Though I am not a vegetarian I must admit that I had great fun at the National Vegetarian Week event at the Window in Islington this evening. My lovely friend and I had the chance to try really tasty canapes, sushi, a fantastic quinoa mini- dish and other vegetarian delicacies and had a very interesting chat with the Window's chef, Annie. There was also a chance to learn how to properly roll sushi, but with just simple use of eye contact both my friend and I, agreed in eating, rather than enrolling.

Talk Of East London

Towpath Cafe is on 42 De Beauvoir Crescent, by Regents Canal off Kingsland Road and its cheap, simple, full of charm and the best place to have breakfast on a sunny day.
Fairly new and not spoilt yet, but it is a matter of time and the city for this beauty to be discovered. Go!

Happy In Whitstable

Just an hour and a bit away from London, Whitstable in Kent is pretty and the fish market is fairly cheap and interesting.
There is also a farmers market with the best pear juice on earth and the biggest Calamata olives in England!
